Ron Street (on the right in the picture) is an ex pilot who
flew various planes during and after the second world war. I met Ron in a
restaurant in Lagos, Portugal at an ex pat wedding anniversary. I was staying
with my dear friends Ray and Helen Wickham who introduced me to him. What a
truly great guy he is and what a small world because he spent his childhood in
Penkhull, Stoke-on-Trent, my home town. We chatted for a while and he was
invited to the Wickham household for lunch. Along he came in his Ozzie hat, as
large as life a character as you could find. Under the shade of the Swallow Farm
patio, we ate a most pleasant lunch and downed a few bottles of selected red
wine too! During this time, Ron kept us all entertained with his stories of his
exploits in Spitfires and Bombers. After the war, he spent some time traveling
the world, but eventually ended up in The Algarve around 1982. He was one of the
first residents of the ex-pat community to settle in the part where my friends
live and, until recently, he and his wife were the two longest serving residents
there. Unfortunately, Ron is now a widower but he still manages ( despite being
almost blind) to use the internet and he also has a full social life. I warmed
to him immediately and told him I'd do him a page on my site. This is it - a
tribute to a generation of brave Englishmen who get fewer by the year. Ron is
now 80, but I hope to spend another pleasant lunch or two with him on my visits
to The Algarve. Thank you for your company Ron. Enjoy the sun and see you in
November.
